History

Uljanik was founded in 1856 in the carefully selected bay of Pula as the main war harbor and the naval base of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The foundation stone was laid on December 9th by the Empress Elizabeth, a date celebrated as the anniversary of the Uljanik Shipyard, one of the oldest in the world. Almost two years after laying the foundation stone - on October 5th, 1858 - the first ship Kaiser with a deadweight of 5,194 tones was launched from the berth on the Uljanik Island. The construction of 56 ships warships for the Austro-Hungarian naval fleet having a total deadweight of 53,588 tones followed.

Uljanik was named after one of the islets in the naturally well protected bay of Pula (St. Florian). This island, on which olive trees used to grow, was held by the peasants from the nearby village of Premantura. Austro-Hungarians bought it and built a shipyard on it, and since then the hull construction is situated on the island (Otok), while the Administrative building, warehouses and workshops are on the mainland (Arsenal). One olive tree has been preserved as a symbol and it's amazing that still produces fruit.

Throughout many years of work Uljanik has gone through different phases of development as well as different owners. During Austro-Hungarian rule (1856-1918) it built and repaired all types of warships. During the Italian rule (1918-1945) it was engaged in repairs, docking and cutting of old ships as well as constructing submarines. After the fall of Italy and during the World War II it became a German naval base and suffered fierce Allied air attacks. After the liberation of Pula, namely after the Shipyard was taken over by the Anglo-American Command, begun the reconstruction. From 1947 it was being renovated under the Republic of Yugoslavia. The first ship was delivered from the restored slipways in 1951. It was the tugboat Neptun which denoted the beginning of a new era in the development of Uljanik Shipyard.

In 1953 Uljanik signed a licensing agreement with the Danish Burmeister & Wain company for manufacturing diesel engines. The second stage of developement began in 1954 by building the vessel Uljanik (10.000 dwt) which was the first ship equipped with a diesel engine and electrical equipment made by Uljanik itself. From 1956 until the end of 2012 an overall 391 engines with a total power of 2.775,614 kW were manufactured.

In the late sixties followed a new stage by building very large vessels and applying the method of building ships in two parts and joining them in a state of floatation. Those were giant tankers and ore/oil carriers of up to 270.000 dwt. In the period from 1972 to 1976 Uljanik built 11 VLCCs.

During the eighties, among others, Uljanik delivers multipurpose vessels, bulk carriers, product carriers, tankers, passenger rail ferry vessels, container vessels and chemical tankers.

Uljanik is also worldwide famous for the construction of car carriers - the first was delivered in 1987, and most of them are built for the Italian Grimaldi Group.

During the 1990s Uljanik entered a new niche - the ships for the transportation of chilled cargo. During the war years in Croatia there are no new contracts due to the risk of investing, so a series of previously contracted tankers for the transportation of chemicals is completed. Uljanik managed to deliver a total of 14 ships from 1991 to 1995. In those years Uljanik became a joint-stock company with completely new market-based bases. At the end of the nineties, it is time for a major technological renovation of the shipyard - new cutting boards are being built with all the necessary equipment and new machines, including the plasma cutter and robotic cutting line, the railroad is introduced to the warehouse, a new panel line is being erected..

In the new millennium Uljanik "returns" to its tried and tested product, car-carriers, but also enters a new niche by contracting Becrux, the first livestock carrier built as a newbuilding. The biggest breakthrough in the niche of extremely complex newbuildings Uljanik made with dredgers for JDN Group.

In the course of 2013. 3.MAJ Shipyard from Rijeka, the second biggest shipyard in the northern Adriatic, was integrated in the ULJANIK Group.

In its long history up to present day Uljanik built all types of vessels for buyers all over the world. Today Uljanik concentrates on the construction of highly sophisticated vessels such as dredgers, jack up platforms, livestock carriers and RORO ships. In 2016 Uljanik entered the world of polar cruises by contracting the world’s first luxury discovery passenger ship with the Australian Scenic Group.
